Hikaru Furuya and Tyler Steer each belted triples and Johnny Weeks ripped three singles in the leadoff-spot, but it wasn’t enough as Poly High School bested the Rams, 6-3, in Millikan’s first complete Moore League game of the season. Dave Silva and Sean Suarez turned in impressive relief pitching efforts to keep the game close at Poly. Dominic Ruggio, Connor Steer and Furuya each added singles. The defense was led by a running catch by rightfielder Freddy Marquez with the bases loaded and another running catch by leftfielder Tyler Steer. Catcher Connor Steer picked off a runner at third with a throw to Furuya. The Rams’ overall record fell to 4-5.

Dean Duggan stole second and Tyler Steer swiped home on a double-steal in the second inning, but that was the Rams’ only run in a 5-1 non-league defeat to Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. Duggan made a great defensive play at first base, while shortstop Johnny Weeks, second baseman Brian Beato and Duggan completed a double-play to lead the defense. Tristin Chamberlain and Hikaru Furuya finished the game for the Rams with sold relief pitching in the non-league battle. The Rams’ overall record was balanced at 4-4.

The runs poured in almost as fast as the rain as the Rams opened the Moore League at home with a 9-0 lead over Jordan High School part-way through the bottom of the third when the game was called. David Silva led the shutout effort over the three innings for the Ram pitchers. Tyler Steer cleared the bases with a triple in a big 6-run third inning, while Jeff Bakke, Randy McKean, Brian Beato, Johnny Weeks and Connor Steer added singles to lead the hit parade. Nate Ganzer, Ian Shaw and Randy McKean all pulled down infield pop-ups by the Panthers in the third inning. The game will be resumed or started over at a later date to be announced.

Hikaru Furuya threw 5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball to lead the Rams to the 4-2 non-league win at home. Sean Suarez and Tristin Chamberlain completed the pitching for Millikan. Ian Shaw sparked the winning 4-run rally in the bottom of the sixth with a walk. With the Rams down, 1-0, Freddy Marquez also walked and Chamberlain was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Johnny Weeks unloaded a bases-loaded triple to put the Rams ahead to stay. Freddy Marquez tripled earlier in the game while Tyler Steer and Weeks added singles. Second baseman Brian Beato made a diving stop and threw out a runner while Furuya picked off a runner with a throw to first baseman Dean Duggan. Weeks started a double-play at short stop and tossed to Beato at second with the relay going to Duggan at first. Millikan improved to 4-3 with the victory.

The Rams’ longest road trip of the year, to Trabuco Hills High School, didn’t prove productive for Millikan, which lost, 4-1, to a powerful opponent. Millikan slipped to 3-3 on the year after the non-league defeat. MARCH 12, 2011 The Rams ran into a tough Pacific High School team and ended up falling, 9-1, in a non-league game at home. Luke Hatwan pitched a perfect 1-2-3 seventh inning for the Rams while Tristin Chamberlain singled and scored the only Ram run in the first inning. Connor Steer added a single for Millikan as the Rams fell to 3-2 on the year.

Sean Suarez struck out 13 batters in six innings of work and Dave Silva accomplished the rare feat of striking out four batters in one inning as the Rams rolled to a 9-3 win over Orange at El Dorado Park. Millikan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on hits by Johnny Weeks, Hikaru Furuya, Tyler Steer and Brian Beato. In the second, the Rams added two more runs on a double by Connor Steer and when Weeks reached on an error and moved around on more fielding mistakes by Orange.
The Rams scored two more in the fifth when Tyler Steer, Beato and Dean Duggan collected hits. After Ram centerfielder Tristin Chamberlain saved a run in the sixth inning with a diving catch in right-center, he reached on an error in the bottom of the inning. On a hit-and-run play, Randy McKean's infield roller and an error by Orange allowed Chamberlain to score all the way from first. Raudel Castro then ripped a double and Furuya singled to cap the Millikan scoring.
The 3-1 Rams will continue play at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12 when they host Pacifica.

Supported by excellent pitching and three double-plays, the Rams' Frosh-Soph team edged St. John Bosco, 3-2, in Bellflower. Shortstop Johnny Weeks started the three double-plays on ground balls, twice tossing to second baseman Brian Beato and once to second baseman Johnny Esparza. First baseman Jeff Bakke completed all three plays. Starting pitcher Hikaru Furuya went six strong innings, striking out three and allowing only two runs. Reliever Tristin Chamberlain stranded the tying run at second base by hooking a curve for called strike-three to end the game.
The Rams broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh on an RBI infield single by Tyler Steer, scoring Weeks, who was off on the pitch from second base and slid into home ahead of the tag. Furuya singled to set up the run after Weeks walked. Connor Steer of the Rams walked and scored on a pair of errors in the fifth to give Millikan a 2-1 lead. In the first inning, the Rams jumped on top on three hits by Connor Steer, Weeks and Tyler Steer. The Rams are now 2-1 on the season.

Dominic Ruggio and Dave Silva combined for five innings of superb relief pitching, allowing only one run. But the Rams were down early, 7-0, and could not come back in an 8-3 loss to host La Mirada.

The Rams' Frosh-Soph team opened the regular season with solid pitching, a game-saving double-play and timely hitting to defeat Katella, 5-3, on Friday, March 4. Ram pitcher Sean Suarez and Tristin Chamberlain combined to allow just three runs in the 7-inning game at Millikan. Second baseman Brian Beato made a diving stop of a grounder, flipped to shortstop Johnny Weeks, who completed the double play by firing to first baseman Jeff Bakke to halt a Katella rally. The 1-0 Rams continue play with another non-league gam at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at La Mirada.
