Varsity Wins Another Close Game PDF Print E-mail

On a cold and rainy day more suited for football, Millikan baseball shined. Just an hour before Saturday’s scheduled start of Millikan vs. Downey in the second game of the Loara Tournament, it was pouring rain at Downey High School. Both teams were waiting and hoping to get this game in. Thanks to a good grounds crew at Downey, and a little help from mother nature, the field survived and the game started on time.

Millikan struck first when Avery Flores singled to right. Flores advanced to 2nd on a passed ball and then to 3rd on a groundout.  With 2 out and Flores on 3rd, Adam Anella laced a 2-0 pitch to right-center field, to score Flores. Downey came back in their half of the third to tie the score 1-1.

Millikan scored again in the 4th to pull ahead 2-1. Matt Clampitt walked to start the inning and advanced to 3rd on back-to-back singles by Jordan Ybarra and Jack Woodbury. Clampitt scored on a bases loaded double play to put Millikan ahead 2-1.  Downey took advantage of a couple Millikan miscues to tie the score in the bottom of the 5th.

In the top of the 6th, with the score tied 2-2 and one out, Sophomore DH Jordan Ybarra stepped up to the plate. Ybarra showed patience at the plate in his previous at bat working a 3-2 count before getting a hit. This time Ybarra again showed good plate discipline and worked the count to 3-1 before driving a pitch over the left-center field wall for a home run. This put Millikan ahead for good, as Clampitt finished out the final two innings for the complete-game win. Final score - Millikan Rams 3, Downey Vikings 2.

Millikan’s starter Matt Clampitt was sharp throughout the game, keeping Downey hitters off balance with a good fastball and a breaking ball with a lot of movement on it.  Clampitt recorded 5 strikeouts while giving up just 5 hits and walking one. His catcher Josh Valdovinos was just as good behind the plate, keeping Clampitt in rhythm and Downey baserunners close.

Rams defense was also instrumental in this close win, recording several key outs on a cold rainy day where one misplayed ball could have been the difference in the outcome of the game. Credit goes out to Downey High School for a great defensive performance and well-played game as well.

This was the second close game one-run win for the Rams in as many games. It’s early, but the Rams are 2-0 and have shown that they can win low-scoring close games, a good sign.

Millikan Baseball Opening Day - Feb 20, 2010 PDF Print E-mail

As always Opening Day has left me with a really great feeling about our school, our program and our families.  What an incredible day!  We received support from our school administration, softball, water polo, cheer, ROTC, PTSA , ASB....AND we were Blessed with beautiful weather.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave blood or registered with Be The Match...I heard that they collected about 25 pints and 30 registrants...that is truly awesome.

It seemed like everyone was involved in the success of the day to some extent- you all worked so hard but there are a few people who deserve special mention...

First off, thank you to Coach Glasser who bought into my vision of Opening Day three years ago and gives us plenty of leash when planning this day.

On behalf of the entire coaching staff, I’d like to welcome everybody to the 2010 season of Millikan Baseball.

In 2009, we experienced the most success in recent years with our varsity team making it to the Quarterfinals of the CIF playoffs and winning the Moore League Championship for the 1st time since 2001.

Now, with a new year ahead of us, and a new group of talented athletes, we need to look forward to the new set of challenges and successes that this year will most certainly bring.

To those of you who are new to the program I would like you to know that  all  I, or any of the other coaches ever ask of the players is for them to become the best player they are capable of becoming.   If we keep this in mind, success is inevitable.  Please support me in this endeavor and I know that you will be proud that your son is a Millikan Ram.

Thanks to players, parents, boosters, and alumni who make Millikan Baseball a program that I am proud to be a part of.

Best Regards and Go Rams! - Coach Glasser

Millikan High has written an amazing new chapter in the rich history of Moore League baseball, and there have been many pleasant surprises along the way. A 43-inning scoreless streak, an almost undefeated run to its first league title since 2001 and the emergence of Josh Frye as a dominant force in Long Beach-area baseball. But arguably the most unexpected figure has been Rams' third baseman Matt Clampitt, who finished second in the league batting race behind Lakewood standout Jeff Yamaguchi.
