Hooks’ Singleton Smacks Two Homers

Just 24 hours after a highlight reel steal of home, Jonathan Singleton showed off his ability with the bat.

No. 43 prospect smacked two homers and fell a double shy of the cycle Tuesday, leading the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks to an 8-2 win over the Midland RockHounds.

It was the first baseman's third career multi-homer game and raised his average to .377 in 17 Texas League contests.

Singleton plated the game's first run with an RBI single to center field in the opening inning, then took A's No. 4 prospect Sonny Gray (1-2) deep leading off the fourth.

The Astros' top prospect legged out a two-out RBI triple in the fifth to make it 5-2 and pulled another solo shot down the right-field line off Brett Hunter in the eighth.

It completed the California native's second career four-hit game and first in nearly two years. The 20-year-old also went yard twice for Class A Lakewood on June 20, 2010 and duplicated the feat for Class A Advanced Clearwater last June 23. The four RBIs were two short of the personal best he set last June 21.

"I'm just going out there trying to hit the ball hard," Singleton told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. "Wherever it lands is wherever it lands. It's always nice to hit home runs.

"I'm definitely starting to find my swing. I feel like I'm taking better cuts at the plate and it just goes from there. I've tried to slow things down in the batter's box and working in the cage, but there haven't been major adjustments."

Singleton ranks among the Texas League leaders in several offensive categories. His .377 average is second to teammate Brandon Barnes (.394), while his .457 on-base percentage is No. 2 behind Midland's Shane Peterson. Acquired from the Phillies in last year's Hunter Pence trade, the 2009 eighth-round pick also is third with 11 extra-base hits and 15 runs scored.

Hooks starter Jose Cisnero (2-1) struck out 12 and allowed two unearned runs on three hits and four walks over five innings for the win. Arcenio Leon and Adalberto Flores combined for four scoreless frames.

Gray gave up five runs on seven hits over six innings, walking two and striking out four.

The dominance in Norwalk continued yesterday as the Long Beach 14 PONY All-Stars beat Pacific Palisades, 11-1, in the Championship game of the 2011 Pony West Zone-West Region Section Tournament. The one run was the first allowed by Long Beach in the seven games played this week, all for the right to play again on July 28th in Whittier at the Super Regional Tournament.

Long Beach sent Tyler Radcliffe to the mound to start things off, and he responded by striking out the side. The Long Beach bats greeted the Palisades pitcher with three singles by Blake Perkins, Chamberlain and Jackson Foss. A Marc Moroney double and a lasted lineout to right field by Josh Goldberg capped the three-run inning.

After a leadoff single in the second, Radcliffe struck out the side to end the threat before the offense picked up where they left off with a single from Hill, a double by Chamberlain, a Foss sacrifice fly and a three-run homer from Moroney to run the lead to seven.

Radcliffe gave up a walk and a stolen base to put the runner in scoring position and a single up the middle broke the Long Beach scoreless streak, but Radcliffe bounced back immediately and recorded his eighth strike out in just three innings of work.

Sean Suarez came in to finish the game on the mound, and he was also unhittable, striking out five in a row before getting a groundout to end the fifth inning. Long Beach put the game away by scoring three times in the fifth on a double by Connor Dunlap, winning 11-1 in a mercy rule.

BASEBALL: Rams' ace delivers, tops Downey in opener of American Legion tournament.

PARAMOUNT – One of the biggest games in the American Legion District 19 Area 4 baseball playoffs is the opener, with teams hungry to stay in the winners' bracket and keep out of the long, tough road that is the losers' bracket. So, when the eight-team, double-elimination tournament opened Tuesday morning at Paramount High, Millikan High and Downey High went with their No. 1 pitchers. And a pitchers' duel ensued, with the Rams' Jimmy Norman edging the Vikings' Anthony Cortez 1-0.

Millikan, in the tournament for the first time in more than a half decade, moved on and will face the winner of Paramount/Lakewood in a winners' bracket game today at 4 p.m., while Downey fell into an elimination game against Narbonne at 10 a.m. Even though Norman has seen his ups and downs, including a tough outing in which he gave up five first-inning runs to La Mirada in his last start, Rams coach Scott Glasser said it was a no-brainer to go with his top pitcher. "He's our best guy, our most experienced pitcher. He's the guy we should have out there," Glasser said. "He was our best guy for this game. He set up his teammates (today's pitcher J.K. McGill) for their opportunities." And Norman didn't disappoint, scattering four hits, walking three and striking out 10 in a complete-game effort.

While the lefty's line was masterful, it did take him some time to get into a groove. Three of the hits and two of the walks came over the first three frames, when Norman allowed runners at first and second in the first with no outs and first and third with two outs in the third. As the game wore on, Norman was at his best. The only hit he gave up after the third was a two-out double to Juan Gonzalez, who advanced to third on a balk, in the fourth, and seven of his strikeouts came after the third. "I was hoping that he could find his way out of that first inning," Glasser said. "He found his rhythm in the third inning. … He's not a strikeout pitcher, so he must have really been mixing up his pitches enough to keep Downey guessing."

The Rams only tagged Cortez for five hits, but three of them came in succession in the pivotal fourth inning. With one down, Cody Heath bunted his way on base and Alex Antoneras followed with his second single of the game to put runners on first and second. The next batter, Johnny Weeks, hit a sharp grounder off the glove of diving second baseman Yamel Delgado, the ball careening away from right fielder Erick Parra. Heath didn't slow up and was waved home by Glasser just ahead of Parra's throw to give Millikan the game's only run. It was the only run Norman needed.

One of 2010′s breakout stars in all of minor league baseball was Phillies’ prospect Jonathan Singleton. Drafted in the 8th round of the 2009 amateur draft out of Millikan High School in Long Beach, CA, Singleton was already well regarded within the Philadelphia organization before roughing up South Atlantic League pitching last season.

The left-handed hitting Singleton made his professional debut as a member of the Gulf Coast League Phillies as a 17-year-old after signing with Philadelphia. In 31 games there, Singleton batted .290, slugged 2 homers and drove in 12 runs.

Nicknamed “The Boss”, Singleton really emerged as he helped lead the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws win a second consecutive South Atlantic League title. Singleton actually began the season in extended spring training, but made a massive impact once he was assigned to the Lakewood roster, posting a .423 average in 19 May games.

In 109 regular season games with Lakewood, Singleton posted a .290 batting average with 14 homeruns and 77 RBI with 9 stolen bases.

The steals production could hit the double digit range as he moves up the ranks, but Singleton’s speed is not one of his best assets.

Singleton has a significantly more thorough approach at the plate than most players his age. He trusts his hands and recognizes off-speed pitches, enabling him to pull breaking pitches and drive fastballs to all fields. In addition, Singleton’s discipline at the plate keeps his walk-to-strikeout ratio (62-to-74, in 2010) at a good level for a power hitter. As Singleton matures and develops more physical strength, his power should increase as well.

Singleton was a first baseman until instructional league ball that followed the 2010 postseason, where he was given a trial in left field. Singleton will continue to play left field going forward this year. The 6’2″, 220-pound Singleton is certainly athletic enough to make the transition to the outfield. He has solid instincts and should be able to display enough range to make folks wonder why he wasn’t in the outfield to begin with.

Speaking about Singleton’s move to the outfield, earlier this month, Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. stated, “If (Singleton) can do it and continues to hit, then he’ll be a left fielder (from now on). It looked like he took to it fairly well at the instructional league. He seems excited to do it. I think he knows there’s a very big first baseman sitting out there in the Major Leagues that’s not going anywhere. He has a very good bat and he has a chance to be a big leaguer.”

Singleton garnered a ton of recognition with his 2010 campaign. Honors included being named the Phillies’ top prospect by multiple outlets, being named to the full season SAL All-star team and being declared as the league’s most outstanding prospect by the South Atlantic League.

“The Boss” even impressed “The Big Piece” when he had the opportunity. In August, Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard made a one-game rehab appearance in Lakewood, while recovering from an ankle injury. Howard spent time with Singleton talking about life and baseball, during batting practice. Howard then watched Singleton closely during the game and was thrilled with the youngster’s swing and his approach, especially at the age of 18.

Moving forward, expect to see Singleton, who turned 19 years old the same day that the BlueClaws clinched the Sally League title in September, as a member of the High A level Clearwater Threshers in 2011.

Everyone within the Phillies’ organization is excited about the type of ceiling the young slugger Singleton has. However, with the exception of outfielder Domonic Brown, the Phillies’ new approach to baseball seems to be dealing away their top prospects for proven big league talent, as is evidenced by the organization parting ways with the likes of Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor, Travis d’Arnaud, Carlos Carrasco, Anthony Gose and others.

With the type of potential that Singleton possesses, it seems to be quite likely that he’ll play in the Majors some day. However, I would be somewhat surprised if “The Boss” makes it happen in red pinstripes.
